Class Descriptions

ivyGOAL Reading Comprehension
Grade: 2nd - 4th or 4th – 6th or 6th – 8th.
Goal: reading comprehension involves more than simply understanding the text. In this camp, students will learn the following skills: critical reading, speed reading, process of elimination and decision making. The goal is to help students read efficiently and make good decisions when answering questions.

ivyGOAL Writing Fundamentals
Grade: 2nd - 5th
Goal: Students will write 3-5 paragraph essays based on age and skill levels. Students will learn how to brainstorm, outline, draft and publish essays. The fundamentals of grammar and essay structures are covered in combination with the use of creativity.

ivyGOAL Advanced & Speed Writing
Grade: 3rd – 6th
Schools often focus on academic writing which takes hours to complete an essay. This camp trains students to write a good quality essay within 30 minutes. A great camp for both writing training and test preps.

ivyGOAL Math Habits for Addition and Subtraction
Grade: 1st – 3rd
Prerequisite: students must be good at solving single digit subtractions, such as, 5-1.
Goal: students will learn multiple digit addition and subtraction, such as, 8+4, 7+ 9, 18+9, 13-9, 27+14, 22-19... Students will also develop good math habits, such as: writing steps cleanly, lining numbers up correctly and double-checking answers for accuracy. Previous students can repeat.

ivyGOAL Math Habits for Multiplication and Division
Grade: 3rd – 5th
Prerequisite: students must have the ability to solve single digit division, such as, 8 / 2.
Goal: students will learn multiple digit division and multiplication, such as, 12 x 4, 13 x 14, 45 x 23, 10/2, 21/3, 54/6, 78/11. This camp will stress the importance of writing out steps cleanly and checking answers, as these skills become more critical at this stage. Good math habits are the key to a student’s success in math and are often underestimated.

ivyGOAL Fraction Fundamentals
Grade: 4th – 6th
Prerequisite: students must be good at subtracting fractions with common denominators, such as, 9 / 5 - 4 / 5.
Students will learn fraction simplification, addition, subtraction, multiplication & division with different denominators. Many students struggle with fractions and mix up fraction operations together. We will help students build a strong foundation for solving fractions.

ivyGOAL Advanced Fractions
Grade: 5th – 8th
Prerequisite: students must possess basic knowledge of fractions, including dividing & subtracting fractions with different denominators, such as, 9 / 4 - 4 / 5.
Students will learn advanced fractions, percent and ratio conversions; and mixed number operation shortcuts that will take their fraction skills to an advanced level.

ivyGOAL Equations & Interests
Grade: 6th – 8th
Prerequisite: students must possess good knowledge of percentages and basic equation operations, such as, 9 / 3 = X / 6.
Students will learn simple and compound interests and advanced equation shortcuts, such as, vertical divide and cross-switch numbers to simplify equations. The course is intended to increase speed and accuracy of important middle school math operations.

ivyGOAL ISEE Prep & Critical Thinking Skills Development
Grade: 4th – 6th
Prerequisite: students must be at the 4th grade level in both reading and math.
Goal: This is an advanced class for students who either want to take ISEE test or want to take their reading, math and analytical thinking skills to a high level. ISEE is the required entrance exam for most private schools. It is very similar to the SAT and demands a high level of critical thinking skills. This course will prepare students for the private middle school exam and help students develop critical thinking skills.

ivyGOAL Problem Solving!
Grade: 3rd – 5th or 6th – 8th. Materials will vary for different groups.
Prerequisite: students must be at 3rd or 6th grade math levels.

Goal: students will learn how to solve word problems effectively. Problem solving is challenging for students because it requires two high level skills (analyzing problems and setting up math expressions) in addition to calculation. This camp will focus on four critical problem solving skills: key info identification, translation into math expressions, divide & conquer and draw it out.
